Blind dates generally result in horrifying stories to tell your friends. But sometimes, every so often, they can lead to something a little more…in this case, marriage.
As some of you know, we were both introduced via email through a mutual friend (thanks Sarah Kunst!). What started with an awkward email exchange, soon led to a blind date on the night of April 1st, 2014.
After six beers and a strong bottle of red wine, we’d be lying if we said it was love after the first date. Rakhi thought Deepen was a little dorky in his hipster glasses and Deepen thought Rakhi was a little pretentious because she refused to drink beer. But we had a great time talking about a lot of things we still don’t remember and that set the stage for date #2.
This is where Deepen’s entirely made up knowledge of wine and Rakhi’s misguided truths about actually watching any sports other than soccer, sealed the deal for the both of us.
Things moved pretty quickly after that. Two months after meeting, Rakhi came down to Maryland to meet Deepen’s family and around the same time, she started discreetly moving her belongings into Deepen’s apartment.
That brings us to December 5th, 2015. On a wintery Saturday morning, Deepen and Rakhi set out on a run down NYC’s West Side Highway. At mile three along Pier 25 they took a short break, partly because Deepen was out of breath, but more importantly because 21 months into their relationship he was certain that Rakhi was the one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with (and also because their parents had already planned an engagement party two weeks later). Standing alongside the water, he got down on one knee, spoke for a lot longer than he should have, promised Rakhi four children and asked her to marry him…..teary eyed she said YES! All the while their friend Jamie captured some amazing shots while discreetly hiding in the bushes.
Our relationship today is the product of our family and friends, who have played an integral role in our story so far. We can’t wait to celebrate with everyone on October 1st and for many more years to come.
